Sabrina Tastes Jenna Ortega?! Music Video Review of Sabrina Carpenter's "Taste"
Sabrina Carpenter - TASTE (Official Video) - YouTube
Writing these music video newsletters brings me a lot of joy, but I don’t always have the time I’d like to dedicate to them, so I’m introducing a new format with shorter, punchier takeaways. Once in a while, I’ll have the time to return to lengthier write-ups. But for now… here are my thoughts on the new ‘Taste’ music video by Sabrina Carpenter.
(1) Sabrina’s venturing back into acting
This was more than a music video. This was a moment for Sabrina to show she’s a great actress, on par with one of the greatest Gen Z female actors, Jenna Ortega, who stars opposite her as Sabrina’s ex’s girlfriend.
Sabrina really shined- balancing moments of anger, humor, and classic lyric singing to camera. (Special mention to the way she passed out during the electrocution scene)
side note: Jenna Ortega’s acting during that voodoo doll scene is a masterclass
(2) The gory of it all
The knife right in the eye UGH… it was def a bit gory for my taste, but I’m soft when it comes to that stuff.
I’ve been hearing a lot about how Gen Z loves horror, so it feels right for the generation she’s creating for, and Jenna was, of course, a great talent to get on board for a storyline like this.
(3) Maybe the problem is him…
I love the fact that the story resolves by repositioning their anger and jealousy of each other on the man who is making them feel so emotionally charged.
They probably wouldn’t feel so at war if the man wasn’t guilty of a little ‘overlapping’. We know that game well, girlies!!
(4) Bi panic
I love the fact that Jenna and Sabrina leaned into a kissing scene. It wasn’t totally necessary, but it’s great that they were willing to go there to make the story sharper than the lyrics on their own (also further proves Sabrina’s acting strengths)
Def caused some bi panic for some of us..
I love that Sabrina is using music videos as a form to creatively storytell, bring new meaning to her lyrics and showcase her talents to uplevel her career. Go sister.
